The Queen Conch, or KARKO, as called on Bonaire, is an endangered, beautifull shell living and growing in the shallow waters near the Mangroves of Lac Bay, Bonaire. The Conch used to be available in abundance and some older fisherman brag that "in the old days" they were fishing some 300 Conch a week! Today this is different.
Since november 2010, when nature organisations DCNA and STINAPA assigned Marine Biologist drs. Sabine Engel to do a scientific study on the conch, her team has found a seriously diminished conch population in Lac Bay of with only a few sexually mature enough to mate.So indeed the conch is endangered. Unfortunately not all visitors or local Bonaireans are aware of the tigth spot the conch is in.

Stinapa, the Bonaire Nature organisation, started an extensive "Pride Aware" program in the local Papiamentu language to increase awareness. The "Adopt a Conch!" program aims similarly to increase awareness amongst the 275.000 people that visit Bonaire yearly.
So now you can help and adopt one of our scientifically tagged conches. And of course you promise not to disturb the conch, don't order Conch from the menu in restaurants and protect the Queen Conch habitat by not touching the reef or corals.
All donations will be used to protect and increase awareness. Ultimately we hope to open a Nature Conservation Visitors Centre in Lac Bay. We hope to welcome you soon..... read more
